Dave Frey has played the banjo since 1969.  He performs professionally with the Southtown Strummers, the Three Plectrums, the San Francisco Starlight Orchestra, the Fourth Street Five Jazz Band, the Jazz Salvation Company Jazz Band, and the Hot Chamber Music Society.  Frey has recorded albums with four of these groups.

Frey has also published two extensive plectrum banjo methods.
