 B&D; question Reply »

I have a Bacon & Day Silver Bell Montana, No. 1 which is all original. I have had it professionally rebuilt including new varnish, New Nickel Plate, New Head & new frets. It has a 5/8" bridge with inserts which are probably plastic inset into the wood. I am Happy with the tone from the 1 and 2 strings but 3 & 4 seem dull to me when compared to a new OME etc. I had heard that people have changed the tone ring with results but wonder if there are other suggestions.

Thanks, Jim Voneman

Hi Jim!
You maybe will get the desired sound by changing the head to a Remo Renaissance (11" Medium crown) and not put to much pressure on the bridge via the tailpiece. And do use heavy gauge strings (010-013-024-032 for tenor tuning).
The Montana - as it is and with a correct set-up - is the next best sounding banjo, I`ve ever played (and Ive played a lot of different brands and models). The absolut best sounding banjo is the B&D; Silver Bell #6 Ne Plus Ultra (due to the use of ebony).
