Who said you must nothing but flatpick your tenor banjo? You can fingerpick it as well! If you retune your tenor banjo from CGda to DGdg, you will sound pretty close to 5-string banjo - all you need is the plastic thumbpick and two metal fingerpicks (and sometimes the capo).
