I have a chance to get a Conrad tenor banjo. I've never played before but have a desire to learn. Alot of people go with 5-string, but this is a 4-string. I'm not sure which way to go, 4 or 5. Could I start with 4 and later go to 5 if that is where my musical taste leads me? I a Conrad ok to start with?

Thanks

Herman

A Conrad, is a starter banjo, but if you start with too low of a grade, you will sacrifice tone.
If you want to play Dixieland, Jazz,Roaring Twenties, then 4 string is the choice.
If you like country, Bluegrass, Mountain style music, or Classical then 5 string would be better, in the long run

I bought a second hand Conrad 4 string Banjo.
I do not pick melody. I only play chords. If you want to play back-up with just chords the tenor is the way to go. My husband plays guitar or accordion and I back him up with the tenor banjo. The 4 string has a special sound. If you want to learn to pick like bluegrass the 5-string is the way to go. However you can play chords with either one. My Conrad is not a expensive one but its fine to learn on.
