An unusual Paramount 5 string Banjo view posts
2 posts  ·  Started by: Russ on 9/10/2002
I just recently purchased an unusual Paramount 5 string Banjo at an Antique Fea Market. It does not look like any of the ones that I have ever seen in pictures. There are no inlays on the peghead or finger board. The name Paramount is either a decal or painted on the peghead (not inlayed).
The interesting thing about it is that the body (ring and reflector) are both made out of Bakelite plastic (brown). The sound head is made out of plastic (not skin). There is not serial number anywhere on the Banjo.
Does anyone know its history (when it was made, why plastic, what it is worth? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Looking over these posts is sad. So little use in two years. I belong to a Yahoo discussion group for four string banjo, and will list this in our link section as a reminder to the 400 plus members.

Hello everyone,
I am writting because I recieved a tenor banjo from my grandmother, she bought it many years ago from her mothers cousin. The only writting it has on it is "princess" on the support that goes through the rim and attached to the neck. There is no other writting on it. It doesn't look like anything fancy, it has a natural hide head and the rim and back look like birds eye maple. I'm just curious to see if anybody might have any info on it. Also it came with a beginner instruction book "Smith's modern school instructor tenor banjo" copywright 1936.If that helps. Thanks for your time.

I am looking for a new head for my grandpa's banjo. It's a Roy Smeck Harmony 4-String Tenor Banjo, and he bought it new in 1967. The head, which has recently split, measures 10 7/8". We've tried other brands but none fits right. My grandpa is blind and gets so much happiness out of his instruments. If anybody knows where I can get a head that might fit his banjo, I would greatly appreciate the information.

My grandather passed away some 10 years ago and left behind a 4 string Penco Banjo. It sat around untouched for years and colected dust. I have found myself thinking about him a lot latley and have pulled out the old banjo and am thinking about learning to play the thig.
I grew up around him and the music he played with his band. I know he was considdered an excellant banjo player by his pears and had a sucessful band for years in the Asbury Park area of NJ.

My question is ware do I start? I had the head rep[laced by a local music store - it was so warn by my grandfathers strumming and picking, that he had warn the color off the skin and you could almost see through it.
Can you tell me anything about the Peaco Banjo, what notes to tune the strings to etc... and any good web pages or books to learn the basics??

Thanks for your help!
